Carpet Care Tips

Regular maintence is vital to protect your carpet investment. Do not worry, as most of the maintence can be easily completed by the owner of the carpet. Below is a guide for general maintence. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us for a personalised complimentary cleaning guide.

Regular vacuuming is one of the most important things you can do to extend the life of your carpet. Vacuuming removes up to 80% of particulate matter from your carpet. Vacuuming at least once a week will prevent dirt from building up in the carpet, and will cut down on the amount of dust in the air in your home. Prevention is also very important. Use door mats at all entrances to your home to prevent dirt from being tracked inside.

If you do spill something on your carpet, the key is to ACT QUICKLY. The faster you clean up the spill, the less of a chance it has to become a stain. The following steps should enable you to get rid of most if not all traces of a spot in your carpet:

  • Carefully blot the stain with a clean towel or plain white paper towels. DO NOT RUB. Rubbing stresses the carpet, causing the pile to break down. Continue blotting the spot until it is completely dry, using as many towels as necesary. Remember, towels are cheaper than carpet!
  • Solids and semi-solids should be scraped off with a rounded spoon. Carefully vacume the spot to remove any remaining debris.
  • Always test any spot removal agents in an inconspicuous area. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. If the spot removal agent causes any discoloration or other damage to the carpet, discontinue use and try another agent.
  • When a suitable spot removal agent is found, carefully blot from the edges of the spot to the center, to prevent the spot from spreading. Repeat as necesary.
  • After the spot has been removed, thoroughly rinse the area with cold water to remove all traces of the spot removal agent. Place a layer of paper towels weighed down with a flat, heavy object over the area. Change the paper towels as needed, until dry. Many cleaning agents will accumulate dirt if left in the carpet.
  • Always follow the cleaning instructions that came with your carpet, and if necesary, consult with the carpet manufacturer.
